The City Council of Watervliet is pleased to announce that we are now awarding the "Citizen of the Month Award." Every year our community benefits from the efforts of many residents who selflessly donate their time and energy towards the betterment of Watervliet. The City Council will being recognizing these individuals in January and will continue to do so at the last council meeting of each month throughout the year.

Bill spends many hours volunteering to ensure that Watervliet playgrounds, including Brotherhood Park and the Watervliet Little League field, are neat and clean for all residents and visitors to enjoy. He also helped with the landscaping at the Watervliet Public Library.

For decades, Karen has expended her own finances and great personal effort to care for stray animals, in particular cats, in the City of Watervliet. She feeds and tends to feral cats, often trapping them and bringing them to SCRUFF (a local organization) to be spayed and neutered.
She is an active and concerned citizen, via her involvement with the Watervliet Public Library and the local HAM radio organization; and she is always willing to lend a hand.

· Brian is the owner of Stripes Sign Shop. He has made banners and signs at little or no cost for numerous organizations and events throughout the City of Watervliet.
· He is also a regular volunteer at numerous fundraising dinners throughout the City.
· Stripes Sign Shop produces the high quality Veteran Banners for the City of Watervliet at a more than reasonable price.
· Paul lives on Railroad Avenue and is the epitome of a good neighbor. He mows the lawn on 9th Avenue and Railroad Avenue and also mows the lawns of those who are unable to do so in his neighborhood.
· During the winter months, Paul snow blows all of the sidewalks and driveways on 9th Avenue and the surrounding areas. You may also see Paul riding his bicycle around the City with a bag and a garbage picker.
· When Paul cooks, he cooks for many. He delivers some of the best Polish food to his neighbors.
· At Christmastime, Paul goes to Schuyler Bakery to buy at least two dozen paska breads for his friends and neighbors, along with a bottle of wine, spreading holiday cheer.
· Paul also takes out everyone’s garbage in his neighborhood on Wednesday night.
Paul never expects anything in return. He takes pride in Watervliet and does everything out of the kindness of his heart.
The Council of the City of Water Vliet honored Charles Jeseo as the February 2018 “Citizen of the Month.” Charles has been a volunteer member of the Water Vliet Housing Authority for over Thirty years. In this capacity he has offered his experience as an accountant to the administration which has helped the organization succeed. Charles has also been active in the Water Vliet Democratic Committee and a strong supporter of Water Vliet fundraisers and events.
As most people know, Kelly has been a teaching assistant at Watervliet Elementary School for many years assisting children with academic and social skills. In addition, Kelly donates time to the Watervliet Little League as a board member and in the concession stand. Kelly’s work with the Relay For Life event has the greatest impact on the City. She works year round to bring this event successfully to our City. The most recent event in June raised over $55,000 for the American Cancer Society.
Kelly makes connections with students, parents and community members and has a positive impact on everyone she encounters.

Tom and Marylou have devoted themselves to the creation and the stability of the Watervliet Historical Society and Museum. They continue to make the museum a place that Watervliet can be proud of. The exhibits are of the highest quality. Tom and Marylou spend countless hours fundraising, and picking up and setting up these artifacts and exhibits.
In addition, the Watervliet Historical Society hosts a variety of historical programs and displays.

Mayor Manning presented Kathy Carpenter with the “Citizen of the Month” award for December 2017.
· Kathy has helped many Watervliet organizations, including Watervliet Housing, Kid’s Count, Historical Society, Senior Center, Watervliet School District, by obtaining funding through her employer. She always keeps Watervliet in mind when these opportunities arise. She always keeps Watervliet in mind when different funding opportunities come up.
Mayor Manning presented Jeff Razzano with the January 2019 Citizen of the Month award. Mr. Razzano is a lifelong Watervliet resident who organizes the “Fright for Hunger” haunted house each Halloween, which in lieu of an admission fee encourages visitors to donate non-perishable food items that are donated to Mary’s Soup Kitchen as Immaculate Heart of Mary Church.
· Willard is a 50+ year resident of Watervliet. He is a proud Korean War veteran.
· Willard keeps his property immaculate, assists his neighbors, helps others shovel and move their cars. He takes great pride in keeping Ted’s Fish Fry parking lot and surrounding property clean and presentable for the company, the community and customers.
· Willard makes it a priority to check in on his neighbors when sick and keeps an eye on their property when they are out of town.
· Lauraine has worked in the high school and elementary school kitchen for over 40 years serving lunches to students, faculty and staff (always with a smile).
· Lauraine prepared the Watervliet High School football team dinners for 10 years. She continues to help with the Hall of Fame events and seasonal banquets.
· Lauraine has donated homemade desserts to the church food pantry for over 20 years.
Paul has attended nearly every city council meeting and has always expressed his concerns for a better Watervliet. We appreciate Paul's comments, suggestions and humor but more so his sincerity in helping out for all our residents.
